Last year was the first time the teams met since 2003. Valpo, who joined the Valley in July, 2017, has earned a spot in the 2018 MVC Championship and can finish anywhere from the No. 3 seed to the final spot, No. 6. Drake battled Missouri State to a scoreless draw in its last contest. Junior goalkeeper Jared Brown (Aurora, Ontario) was sensational in goal making 10 saves. He kept the league-leading scorer Josh Dolling, off the scoreboard as Dolling took seven shots with five on target. As a team, the Bears outshot the Bulldogs, 14-5. For his efforts, Brown was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Brown has played nearly every minute in net this season and leads the MVC in saves with 84 and save percentage at 85.7. Postseason implications are on the line for Drake (6-5-3, 1-2-2 MVC) when it takes the pitch against Valparaiso (4-7-4, 1-1-3 MVC). The Bulldogs are trying to qualify for the MVC Championship, Nov. 7-9-11, in Evansville, Ind. Three MVC matches will be played Saturday night and based on the outcomes off all three, Drake can finish as high as the No. 3 seed or be left out of the six-team field at the championship. If Drake loses to Valpo and Bradley defeats Evansville, the Purple Aces claim the final spot and the Bulldogs season is over. A loss by Bradley will also secure a spot for Drake.
