first_imgThe Grammy has just revealed a number of changes to its rules and voting procedures, which will take effect for the 2018 Grammy Awards. Thus far, the major changes include the introduction of online voting for its 13,000 members, a number of changes for the top album of the year, and the introduction of nomination review committees for the genres of rap, contemporary instrumental, and New Age genres. These various changes come in response to a number of pushbacks from the general public and from members of the academy.Changing over to an online voting platform has been in the works for a while, creating an online system that they believe will help maintain voting integrity in response to previous security concerns. While the Latin Grammys made the switch last year, the American Grammys are finally catching up, noting that it will enable better participation across the Academy’s 13,000 members. The Academy experts expect that younger voters, as well as touring musicians, will be most affected by the switch, allowing them to participate even if they are on the road during the voting period.Another large change to the process is regarding credit for top album of the year. In previous Grammy Awards, any featured artist, producer, or engineer would be credited — the new rules expand songwriters to be part of the list of nominees. However, to avoid dozens of people being credited with the top album, any artist, songwriter, producer, or engineer on a top album must have worked on at least 1/3 of the album in order to gain credit for the top album. This avoids people who work on only one song on an album with a dozen-plus tracks gaining credit for the record as a whole, as has occurred in previous years.Of these major changes to the 2018 Grammy Awards’ process, the final large-scale change is the creation of nomination review committees for the genres of rap, contemporary instrumental, and New Age. These committees come in reaction to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis winning the best rap album over Kendrick Lamar in 2014, which was highly criticized, including by winner Macklemore himself. As Bill Freimuth, senior vice president of the Grammy Awards noted in an article by Stereogum, “We form these committees only when we hear from . . . . those genre communities (when) they feel like something’s wrong, or that our nominations could be better. . . . For rap, what they were finding was that ‘legacy’ artists, almost no matter what they released, they would get a nomination because of their name recognition and fan base.”The 60th Grammy Awards will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 28th, 2018. Nominees for the award show will be announced on November 28th, with nominees drawn from output during Oct. 1, 2016, through Sept. 30, 2017.last_img
