E.J. Dionne on the Dec. 4 Gazette editorial page, in making a point, said the following: Categories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion “But when Congress did truly big things in the past — the Affordable Care Act, the major tax cuts of the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush eras, the tax increases under Bill Clinton and Barack Obama — there was serious discussion over an extended time.”Serious discussion over an extended time in reference to the Affordable Care Act? Are you really serious? How does one, with a straight face, claim this? Does “We need to pass it in order to know what’s in it” by Nancy Pelosi ring any bells? This was possibly the most financially affected bill to the public of the 21st century, yet it was passed not only without serious discussion, but with no discussion.E.J. Dionne is, deservedly, a well known and respected columnist. Yet even he apparently has been affected by the liberal disease of “Let not the truth be told, for liberalism trumps all,” especially when it trumps Trump, in spite of the truth and facts. Arthur C. Our Sports ReporterGUWAHATI: A solid captain’s knock from Smriti Mandhana went in vain as England today won the third match of the Women T20I Series against India in a nail biting finish at the ACA Stadium, Barsapara here today.Chasing 120 runs to win India scored 118-6 in their 20 overs. Host required only three runs in the final over to win the match and there were six wickets in their hand. But they just managed to score only one run thanks to a terrific bowling from Kate Cross, who later adjudged player of the match. With this victory England clinched the 3-match T20I Series 3-0.India used six bowlers in the game and surprisingly five of them were spinners. The decision worked extremely well. England, opted to bat, scored at a rapid pace at the initial stage of their innings and once they were 46-0 after the end of the fifth over. But from that point Indian spinners completely turned the table. In the next five overs, England lost three wickets on way to add only 8 runs. India continued good work by taking wickets on regular intervals thereafter too and it forced England to score 119-6 in their 20 overs. Both openers Wyatt (24) and Beaumont (29) added 51 runs on the first wicket partnership in same number of balls. Jones (26) was the other major contributor in the innings.Among the Indian bowlers Anuja Patil (2-13) and Harleen Deol (2-13) came out with the best figures.Chasing a relatively low total, India captain Mandhana led from the front. Although India lost Harleen (1) at the early stage of the innings but captain Mandhana repaired the damage nicely adding 49 runs on the second wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues. Later she added another 28 runs with Mithali Raj and almost ensured team’s victory. But things changed after Mandhana’s (58, 39 balls, 4X8, 6X1) exit. Mithali thereafter tried her best to take India home with unbeaten 30 from 32 balls. She hit two boundaries on 18th over and another in the 19th to give big smiles to nearly 10,000 spectators who thronged into the stadium to watch the game. India required just three runs in the final over but Mithali was forced to stand at the non striking once Kate Cross started the final over of the match. The bowler bowled a magnificent spell and didn’t allow even a single in the first five balls of the over.Bharti Fulmali, facing Kate, failed to connect properly first three balls and in the fourth one she lost her wicket. In the very next ball India lost another wicket in the form of Anuja Patil (0) and it took India to score three runs from the last ball. Shikha Pandey, who faced the last ball, scored a single and India suffered one run defeat in the tie.Later talking to the media persons Indian captain Smriti Mandhana admitted that she was very disappointed on the result of the game. “It was really disappointing. We should win the tie. Batswomen must take more responsibility.”On the other hand England captain Heather Knight felt the match was a brilliant for the crowd.Commenting on Cross’s last over, where she spent only one run, Knight said, “She was outstanding. Bowled exceptionally well in that over.”Brief scores: England 119-6 (20 overs), Wyatt 24, Beaumont 29, Jones 26: Anuja Patil 2-13, Harleen Deol (2-13), India 118-6 (20 overs), Smriti Mandhana 58, Mithali Raj 30 (no), Cross 2-18.Also read: Local Sports

The memorial was part of the 9/11: Never Forget Project, an initiative started by the national foundation in 2003 when members “discovered that most college campuses were either completely ignoring the anniversary or holding a politically correct event instead,” according to its website. Wednesday’s event was the first to take place on USC’s campus, although YAF chapters at other universities have participated in the past. Nearly 3,000 American flags flanked the pathway at the entrance of USC Village Wednesday in memory of the lives lost in the Sept. 11 terror attacks in 2001. The project was organized by the USC chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, a national conservative political organization. Young Americans for Freedom planted nearly 3,000 American flags at the USC Village lawn Wednesday in memory of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The memorial was part of the national chapter’s 9/11: Never Forget Project.(Sasha Urban | Daily Trojan) Jay Goldstuck, a junior majoring in film production, said she chose not to interact with the memorial because of her disagreement with previous YAF activities, including an event that the group hosted featuring conservative commentator Ben Shapiro last October. YAF Activities Chair Kailee Evans stressed that although YAF identifies as a conservative group, members tried to make the event “as apolitical as possible.” The Sept. 11 attacks were the deadliest terror attacks in United States history. Nineteen members of the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four planes and ultimately killed 2,977 people in three different states. Members spoke about the memorial’s importance, especially because a growing number of students have little to no memories of the event. Those born on Sept. 12, 2001, will turn 18 Thursday, making them the first adults to be born after the attacks took place. “Each flag represented someone who was killed,” Goldstuck said. “But it was kind of an attempt to group them all as Americans and not as … having identities beyond being American, which is how the right turns the discourse about 9/11 to be an Islamophobic conversation.” Lawmakers recently extended the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund through 2090, ensuring that billions of dollars will go toward the medical treatment and monetary compensation of thousands of people who have been impacted by that fateful day. While Goldstuck, an international student from South Africa, said she understood the importance of memorializing the lives lost in 9/11, she said the event could only be viewed as apolitical “in a bubble.”
The Sept. 11 attacks prompted a military campaign known as the War on Terror, which has led to over 480,000 deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to a 2018 study from Brown University. Hate crimes against Muslim people surged by 1,600% in the year following the attacks, according to FBI data. YAF Chairman Maxwell Brandon said that last year’s anniversary was the first during which YAF was an official campus organization, but members weren’t able to reserve a lawn for the display. This year, he said, YAF members were organized and secured a spot at USC Village, although he said he would have preferred a more central location like Alumni Park. “I don’t want to polarize anyone and make them not feel included in this event because they don’t necessarily agree with those political standpoints,” said Evans, a junior majoring in business administration. A table manned by students throughout the day displayed pins that read “9/11: Never Forget” and “YAF Believes in America,” in addition to pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution. Unlike other YAF events, members said they decided not to include their more political souvenirs, such as stickers that support the Second Amendment. Although USC chapter members stressed that the project was meant to be bipartisan, the national foundation urges students to participate in the project in an online step-by-step guide that reads, “Don’t let the Left appropriate this day to promote their politically correct, socialist agenda” and suggests that students invite a conservative speaker to campus in connection with the project. Brandon, a senior majoring in accounting and business administration, said YAF members purchased the flags for around $400 using a discount provided by the national organization. Evans said she would have considered co-organizing the event with a more liberal campus organization but that doing so would have complicated the terms under which Young America’s Foundation would have been able to sponsor the campus event. YAF is hosting a discussion Thursday night at the Von KleinSmid Center with two former FBI agents, Jason Weiss and Jim Watkins, as a follow-up to Wednesday’s memorial. YAF Recruitment Chair Justin Weiss said his father, who is one of the speakers, was involved in forensic analysis following the 9/11 attacks and plans to speak about his experience.

Those in favour of betting on esports in the United States earned a big win last month as the Supreme Court ruled the Professional and Amateur Sports Act of 1992 unconstitutional. This made sports betting legal in the eyes of the federal government, leaving regulations up to each state. Last week New Jersey lawmakers passed a bill with sports betting regulations including what seemed like a ban on esports events held in the United States. The bill was then signed into law by Governor Murphy on Monday but only two days later the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement put out emergency regulations concerning the law. These regulations included a change in the wording of the regulation: “A ‘prohibited sports event’ includes all high school sports events, including high school electronic sports events and high school competitive video game events, and any electronic sports event in which any participant is 17 years old or younger.”It seems as though the original wording in the bill was meant to regulate against esports events sponsored by high schools or consisting of players under the age of 18 which has now been adjusted to reflect as such. This minor change now opens up room for esports betting to potentially take place in New Jersey.Lars Lien, CEO of esports betting start-up Luckbox commented on the developments: “While it’s still unclear exactly how the new laws will be interpreted, the fact that esports might be included is fantastic news. If indeed New Jersey will allow operators to offer regulated esports betting, it is another important step towards ensuring that the esports community is served by operators with the highest standards of player protection.”Esports Insider says: This is a welcome change to the wording on such an important piece of legislation. While it might seem minor, it now opens up many doors for legal esports gambling in New Jersey and the rest of the United States.Sign up to our newsletter!
