Whether it is a first home for struggling young couples, something easy to maintain for downsizing retirees or a hilltop mansionfor millionaires, Mooroobool, just 5km west of the city centre, has it all. Often lumped in with Manoora and Manunda as one of the notorious “M suburbs”, the suburb’s diversity and strong communitylinks is one of its great strengths. Full of interesting characters, the suburb made state news last year when mining industry worker Mark McCrohan carved a faceinto a fig tree on Lime St, Mooroobool and trimmed the foliage into an afro akin to the hair-do of the great Jimi Hendrix. Mr McCrohan said the tree was planted at the site by the house’s former owner in memory of his late sister. Mooroobool is also popular with residents for its east-west daily commute, cutting the much busier north-south routes thattend to become more congested during peak hours. While family homes dominate, there are still plenty of units, apartments and townhouses for those who prefer a more compactdwelling. Affordable houses and units make up most of Mooroobool on the flat, but head up the hill to the high-profile City View estateand there are a bevy of million-dollar-plus manors to be found. Like many Cairns suburbs, Mooroobool is blessed with an abundance of parks and forest reserves for walking, recreation orsimply passing the time.
